COH and Goondir Health Services Celebrate NAIDOC Week in Dalby

18 July 2024

Last week, the Health-e-Regions team from the Centre for Online Health joined forces with research partner Goondir Health Services in Dalby to celebrate NAIDOC week.

During the NAIDOC week event, attendees were treated to a heartfelt Welcome to Country and witnessed a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by local Elders—a beautiful way to honour new babies in the community. Highlighting the focus on culture and community connection. Goondir’s Bush Barber haircut-and-yarn service provided an opportunity for community members to get a trim while engaging in meaningful conversations with local counsellors.

COH Director Prof Anthony Smith and Telehealth Service Manager Lisa Garner enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with Goondir CEO Floyd Leedie and Chairman Gary White. Supporting Goondir Health Service’s community strengthens our partnership and fosters collaboration to improve healthcare access.

The Health-e-Regions Program

The provision of Health-e-Region’s services enhances access to health services and helps to bridge the gap in healthcare for First Nations community members Here’s how:

  1. Telehealth Services: The program offers children Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology services by telehealth which are supported by a Health Worker in a culturally safe environment
  2. In-Person Audiology Services: Beyond telehealth, Health-e-Regions provides in-person audiology services to Goondir Health. This ensures that community members receive comprehensive care, whether face-to-face or virtually.
  3. Bridging the Gap: By combining telehealth and in-person services, Health-e-Regions bridges the gap in healthcare accessibility bringing vital allied health support directly to those who need it most.

Health-e-Regions is supported by Shell’s QGC and delivered by The University of Queensland’s Centre for Online Health. The social investment program, supported by Shell’s joint venture partners Tokyo Gas and CNOOC, helping children in the Western Downs to access allied health support.
